Common Questions

What is RTI and why should I file one?
RTI (Right to Information) Act 2005 gives every Indian citizen the right to request information from any government department. If a government service has failed you — road not repaired, ration card pending, salary not paid — RTI forces the department to respond within 30 days.
What happens if the government doesn't reply?
If no reply within 30 days, you can file a First Appeal with the First Appellate Authority of that department. If still no response after 45 days, you can file a Second Appeal or complaint with the Central/State Information Commission (CIC/SIC). Our tool guides you through each step.
Is filing an RTI safe? Will I face any problem?
Yes, it is completely legal and protected by law. The RTI Act protects applicants from harassment. You are not required to give any reason for seeking information. Government officials are penalized ₹250/day for delays.
How do I submit the RTI after generating?
You can submit online via rtionline.gov.in (Central Government) or your state's RTI portal. Alternatively, print the generated application and send it by post/in-person to the concerned department's PIO along with ₹10 application fee (IPO/cash/DD).
What information cannot be obtained through RTI?
RTI doesn't apply to private organizations, intelligence agencies (IB, RAW), and information that threatens national security, privacy of individuals, or ongoing investigations. Section 8 of the RTI Act lists all exemptions.
